Day 24, Monday – Loose Ends in Berlin Pt. 2

Next we went to the Eastside Gallery, which is a stretch of the Berlin Wall where the city commissioned artists to paint portions of it. It was interesting to see the different ways in which these artists made their statements, and it also made an impression to see such a long stretch of the wall still standing and to think about how the wall used to be an actual divider instead of a canvas. The faces are kind of a recurring theme on painted sections of the wall, and I included photos of a few other pieces of work that I thought were particularly impactful.

Libby’s host parents had told her where to get the best currywurst in Berlin (the best wurst hehe), so we decided to track that down next. We found the currywurst place under a U-bahn bridge, and it started to hail or snow while we were there, but we made it, and it tasted great! The stand/restaurant is called Konnopke’s Imbiß, and it had been operating since the 1930s.

Afterward, we headed back to the hostel to prepare to leave. We all gathered and made various connections to get back to the Berlin Hauptbahnhof train station so that we could return to Hamburg. At the station, we finally tracked down some Berliners at a Backwerk. If you are what you eat, then ich bin ein Berliner, too, JFK.

Libby’s host dad picked us up from the train station when we returned to Hamburg, and then my host parents, Libby’s host dad, and Libby and I all had some crackers, spreads, cheese, grapes, and wine as a nice little gathering since this is our last week in Hamburg. Libby’s host dad told us some stories about when he visited East Germany, my host family talked about their visit to Munich that weekend, and Libby and I shared some of what we did in Berlin.
