Day 16, Sunday – Spass in Hamburg Pt. 3

Miniatur Wunderland is in the Speicherstadt district, which used to be a warehouse district for the shipping industry. After we finished exploring Mini Wunderland, we went to a coffee shop also in the Speicherstadt district, where they brew their own coffee. The interior decor suited the district (kind of like how Southpoint is designed to be reminiscent of the Industrial Era days), so it was cool to sit in there for a while. I had a slice of cake (which apparently had alcohol in it, whoops) and a cup of hot chocolate with a small side of whipped cream (pictured above).

Afterwards, the four of us went to St. Michael’s Church for a 6:00 service, which was more musically-focused than most services I think. Here is a statue of Martin Luther outside of the church. Apparently, northern Germany is generally more Protestant and southern Germany is generally more Catholic.

The interior of the church was breathtaking. The orchestra sat in the balcony on the left of the photo above. The church also had three organs– the two on the left and right of the photo above and another, larger organ that was in the balcony behind where we were sitting.

St. Michael’s from the outside

After St. Michael’s, our host moms went home, and Libby and I went to the Dom, which is like a traveling state fair.

It was really beautiful when it started to get dark at the Dom. We walked around and looked at all of the rides and shops, and we sampled some of the fair food and drinks, including Astra, kebobs and bratwurst, pommes, and Schmalzgebäck.
